CHAPTER THIRTY-SEVEN
I took deep breaths, trying to keep calm. I folded the notes slowly, to keep the pages from making any noise, and tucked them in my back pocket. All the while, I strained to hear what Rob was doing.
Muted footsteps. Going toward the kitchen? It was only a matter of time before he figured out that I wasn’t downstairs.
The room was dimly lit by the full moon, but the blackness in the hallway looked almost solid. The nearest phone was in Linda’s room but, with the electricity turned off, chances were the phone service had been as well. Even if I could make the call, Rob would find me easily. He probably had the gun by now. All I had was a set of keys and a flashlight. Not exactly an even match. I could climb out a window, but the thought sent chills down my spine. I’m not exactly phobic about heights but I’m about as happy with the thought of jumping from a building as I would be with having surgery without anesthetic. Anything above ground floor seems too far to fall. With my luck, I’d probably break my legs.
