CHAPTER SIXTEEN
“When was this, exactly?” I asked.
Irma licked her lips. “It was early in the afternoon. I heard this crash. Seemed like it might have come from Gilbert’s place, so I thought maybe he came back. But no one answered when I knocked. I figured maybe I was mistaken and the noise came from another apartment. So I went back to my place. A few minutes later, I hear heavy footsteps sounding like they’re coming from the other side of the wall.”
She leaned in close, like an old girlfriend sharing a confidence. “So I opened the door just a wee little crack. I heard Gilbert’s door open and close and saw this big man walk by. He looked like the mean sort, too.”
